Now more than ever nurse executives are challenged with maintaining high quality patient care while also caring for the nurses whose job it is to deliver that care. For years, nurses have cared for the most vulnerable in our population, today the need for resources to close care gaps is critical. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has brought great challenges, the need for innovation in our healthcare system has never been greater. I joined the healthChannels team as a consultant in 2017 to specifically address the challenges faced by nurses and organizations. I’m driven by the opportunity to work alongside a group of executives that really care about how patients are cared for, along with the ability to give clinicians the time they need to achieve the value-based care goals we have long talked about.
During my years as an emergency room staff nurse, the most difficult part of my practice was ensuring I could spend the appropriate time with my patients when they needed me. There was never enough time – or enough help – to achieve that goal. As a nursing administrator, many of the staff nurses expressed the same challenges encouraging me to continue on my journey toward finding a solution. As a Ph.D.-c candidate, my research is focused on health promotion, as well as factors influencing differential organizational support for nursing practice within acute care hospitals.
Re-imagining the nursing care model has been a conversation many nurse leaders often discuss. Today, in the midst of a global pandemic, the time to change has become even more pressing. We have developed a toolkit to help our partners address the biggest challenges of 2020 – nurse turnover, overtime, and improving the quality of care our patients receive. We hope that you will continue to visit our Learning Center and encourage you to use these toolkits to assist in guiding your organization toward better efficiency and optimal patient care. We will unpack solutions to these challenges in future briefs as part of our Innovation & Excellence Series.
