Emergency & Urgent Care

Support the Clinical Team Through Changing Demand.

Unscheduled care places different demands on staffing and documentation. HealthChannels helps organizations define support around the pace of the encounter, the responsibilities of the team, and the operational conditions of the setting.

How Can Care Team Design Support Unscheduled Care?

Care team design clarifies which work requires clinical judgment and how the surrounding tasks will be supported. In emergency and urgent care settings, the model needs to account for changing arrivals, varied encounter types, and timely documentation.

Design Around Variability

An average daily volume does not show the entire operating challenge. The timing of arrivals, variation in patient needs, and the sequence of work can change the support required during a shift. A useful plan examines those conditions before assigning a fixed model.

Emergency departments and urgent care clinics should be evaluated in their own context. They have different responsibilities, patient populations, and operating constraints. A support approach should reflect the actual setting rather than assume that all unscheduled care works the same way.

Keep Documentation Responsibilities Clear

Documentation support should fit the encounter and the provider’s workflow. In-person or virtual scribes and AI-enabled draft notes may address different parts of that work. The team needs to know who captures information, who reviews the record, and how corrections are handled.

HealthChannels considers documentation within the full care team workflow. We define support responsibilities, preserve clinician ownership of the record, and plan how information moves between team members.

Measure What the Support Model Can Influence

Select measures that match the intervention, such as note completion, coverage reliability, and clinician workload. Broader throughput depends on additional factors, including resources and processes beyond the documentation workflow.

Review the first implementation with local leaders and the people using the support. Identify the parts that are working consistently and the exceptions that require adjustment. Any expansion should take those findings into account, including the training and management effort needed to sustain the model.

Common Questions

What to Know.

Are Emergency Departments and Urgent Care Clinics Treated the Same Way?

No. The design should reflect each setting’s responsibilities, demand, and workflow. Shared capabilities may be used differently.

Can Documentation Support Alone Resolve Throughput Problems?

Documentation support addresses part of the workflow. Throughput may also depend on staffing, physical capacity, and other operational processes, which should be considered when evaluating results.
